Stories exploring the connection between moments and memories

“Life is not what one lived, but what one remembers

and how one remembers it in order to recount it.”

Gabriel García Márquez

Moments vs. Memories

There are moments and there are memories. We go through life thinking they are one and the same, but this could not be farther from the truth. We hold on to memories, we carry them inside ourselves. Sometimes we alter them to better suit a mood or a particular situation. Other times we unearth them to justify our thoughts and our behaviours and our lives.

In the same way that books and films can be “inspired by real-life events” you could say that our lives are “inspired” not by the moments we live through but what we make of them. P
eople form perceptions of us not only through our actions but also, through the stories we tell them about ourselves.

These bite-size pieces of fiction explore the connection between moments and memories. They begin with a factual account of an isolated and often unremarkable moment. Three different memories follow. Three variations of the single moment, each one revealing how a different memory of the same moment can alter the course of a life. Ultimately, it’s not the moments that mark us, it’s our memories of them.

And what about the moment itself? It’s long gone and forgotten.

Author's note: For those who favor consistency in theme, think of this series as a ‘slow coffee’ experience; artisanal brewing methods that give the brewer maximum control over the variables that make up your daily pick me up. If however, you are a reader for whom the caffeine metaphor is getting a little long in the tooth fear not! You won’t find a granule, nary a bean within the stories.
